It means that you’re bi-cultural: both Asian and American, yet neither at the same time depending on where you are. In Asia, you’re American; in America, you’re Asian. You are also bi-cultural in the sense that you walk a fine line between being a person of color and being a…

Hmmm. What does it mean to be Asian American.

1. Your elementary school friends gawk and laugh at the strange assortment of fermented bean pastes and kimchi in your fridge. These are the same friends that will ask to come over to your house for dinner every weekend when your at home from college.

2. You facepalm really hard at the amount of times sales people butcher your last name over the phone. Then you wonder why your romanized English last name sounds nothing like your actual Korean last name.

3. You have two separate groups of friends, Asians and Other. Your attempts to reconcile and rationalize the differences in your behavior, between when you hang out with one or the other, is laughable (and sad).

4. When people who don’t know you, ask you “So where are you from?” You can be a stickler and say “Chicago, unless you’re referring to my ethnicity. Then it’s go fuck yourself.” Or you can be pleasant and just say, “Korea.” Even when they say stupid things like, “I love Orientals!”

5. You see Long Duk Dong in 16 Candles and think, “WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING BRO?”

That’s what it means to be Asian American.

unless you’re referring to my ethnicity. Then it’s go fuck yourself.” I lol’d :D
